Questions & Answers
Q — Is four-day Test crickÂet the way forÂward? The Zim Test has a feelÂing of ‘falseÂness’ about it…
A – Most changes to the game have a ‘gimmicky’ feel about them iniÂtialÂly, and the vast majorÂiÂty of pubÂlic opinÂion is inevitably against them. Human nature. InstincÂtiveÂly I would preÂfer Tests to remain at five days but, logisÂtiÂcalÂly, it makes so much sense to move to four days with more overs per day. A three-Test series could then be played in three weeks with each match startÂing on ThursÂday and finÂishÂing on SunÂday. InterÂnaÂtionÂal fixÂtures are being squeezed hardÂer and hardÂer by domesÂtic T20 leagues so changÂing the Test forÂmat may be a way to save them. I’d rather have four days of Test crickÂet than none. And I’d rather see three four day Tests than two five day Tests. We’ll get used to it.
Q — Where does AB fit back into the Test XI? And should he walk straight back in after almost a year away from Test cricket?
A – Good quesÂtion, and one that I don’t believe anyÂbody has the answer to at the moment. Yes, of course he should slot straight back in. Ottis GibÂson may have rufÂfled a few selecÂtoÂrÂiÂal feathÂers when he said that, if AB and Dale Steyn look him in the eyes and say ‘I’m ready’ then they will play. But they are the excepÂtionÂal playÂers of their genÂerÂaÂtion and if they are fit then they play. No quesÂtion. It is no secret that Faf du Plessis is strugÂgling to be fit in time for the BoxÂing Day Test so that might be a simÂple, short-term soluÂtion. Long term I susÂpect QuinÂton de Kock might move back to sevÂen with four speÂcialÂist bowlers playÂing rather than an all rounder at six or seven.

If the 4 day Test will have more overs per day, then I don’t see why we can’t start at 08:30. DurÂing the sumÂmer months the sun risÂes at five so there’s plenÂty of time for the playÂers to get to the park and warm up. I don’t realÂly care about the gin-sipÂping offiÂcials as they don’t realÂly conÂtribute that much in any case.
Either that or turn these games into propÂer day/night pink ball games so we don’t lose time over bad light. Add in an extra evening sesÂsion of 23 overs and it will be brilliant.
Hi Hilton, I’m pretÂty sure startÂing times will be moved back to accomÂmoÂdate more overs in 4‑day Tests but the probÂlem in many parts of the world is mornÂing dew. Still, crickÂet is (very gradÂuÂalÂly) becomÂing less preÂcious about itself so maybe, in the years to come, mornÂing dew will be regardÂed as much of a natÂurÂal hazÂard as evening dew is in day-night games! AnyÂway, our 4‑dayer against Zim is a day-nighter so we’ll be startÂing at 1;30.
And by the way, not all adminÂisÂtraÂtors sip gin!
